SMHC Weight Loss Surgery and Weight Management Program

The Weight Loss Surgery and Weight Management program is a cooperative effort by Southern Maine Health Care to provide patients with obesity access to advanced approaches to weight loss by either (bariatric) surgery or weight management. Southern Maine Health Care’s Weight Loss Surgery program offers weight management counseling as well as two surgical procedures: laparoscopic Rou-en-Y gastric bypass, and the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.

Why choose us?

  • An MBSAQIP Accredited Center: We adhere to national standards set forth by the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
  • An experience team: We have performed bariatric surgery for more than 35 years and laparoscopic bariatric surgery for more than 15 years.
  • Personal, focused care: We provide personal care that focuses on the whole person. Our patients are treated like family.
  • Support services: We welcome patients to participate in support groups as well as nutrition and behavioral health counseling before and after their surgery.

Is weight loss surgery effective?
Over 64 percent of American adults are overweight and roughly 15 million are severely overweight. Severe obesity is defined as people who are greater that 100 pounds over their ideal body weight for their height. For the majority of these people medical therapies such as dieting, change in eating behaviors or drugs have resulted in temporary weight loss often with regaining of that weight and more. Over 300,000 Americans die each year as a result of obesity-related health conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, acid reflux disease to name a few. The ultimate goal is to cause significant weight loss and to maintain long term weight loss through bariatric surgery. Surgery is the only treatment proven to reliably achieve long term weight loss, ease or reverse the obesity-related health conditions in the severe obesity and is a recommended treatment by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Where can I learn more?
SMHC's Weight Loss Surgery team conducts free information sessions for patients interested in learning more about our program. We encourage patients to bring their support partner to the information session as well. These seminars are conducted at SMHC Biddeford's 1st floor classroom every 2nd Wednesday of the month from 5 to 6pm, also at the SMHC Sanford Campus, every 4th Thursday, 5 to 6pm.

Attendance at an educational seminar is mandatory in order to start the enrollment process in the weight loss surgery program. You will be able to meet members of the bariatric team. You will learn general information about weight loss surgery at SMHC and pick up an application.
